How to Password Protect & Partition a USB Flash Drive

time2010/11/04

USB flash drives are useful for their ability to efficiently transport large amounts of data in a very compact shell. Any information that is stored on the drive, however, is easily opened by simply inserting the drive into a USB port. Password protection for USB drives will prevent other people from accessing your files and media without proper authorization. Partitioning your flash drive adds further security by allowing you to seal off sections of your hard drive to preserve data.

Instructions

Download and install programs for partitioning your drive and password protecting it. Visit the Rohos website and download the software for partitioning the flash drive. Download Cypherix or USB Secure for password protection.

Open the Cypherix or USB Secure program. Click "File" and choose "Create New Password." Choose a memorable and hard-to-guess password for your drive, write it down and keep the password in a secure location (separate from where you keep your computer). Click "Finish" to complete the process of password protecting your flash drive.

Open the Rohos program by double-clicking on its program icon. Connect your USB flash drive to your computer. Check the "Yes" box next to the "Partition drive" option. Click "Okay" to partition the flash drive. Close the program and remove your flash drive once finished. Attach your USB drive to the computer again and double-click on its icon to access the partition.
